Meet 25 year old Alex Sebletese Robert, he is in charge of The Alchemist’s sound, light and event coordination and he is from Nairobi Kenya. He came to be a part of The Alchemist family because The Bus moved into the space, at the very beginning of the journey.

” Basically I make stuff happen here, logistically speaking. Peng usually does the booking, and it is up to me to make sure everything goes smoothly without a hitch. My days usually begin from noon till whatever time the day’s event ends, which sometimes can be at 6.00 or 7.00 am the next day, then I go home to recharge, and I am here once more to do it again by noon. This happens every day except Monday.

So a little backstory on The Alchemist, and how the bus and The Yard all came together. Back in 2015, November I think it was, Peng came to 80 Muthithi Avenue where the bus used to be, and it was just a day before we committed to making the move to another spot not too far from here. Anyway, after a meeting with Vincenzo and a quick scouting trip to this place, which by the way you would not beleive how wild it was, Peng managed to convince us to move here instead, and the rest is history. I used to do film and photography before, but since I kind of knew my way around sound, I took it up and learnt it.

My love for Rhumba is everlasting, but since I started working at the Alchemist I started listening to House and more deep and chill tunes. The atmosphere here is very mellow and carefree, so I figured out what people like to listen to, and made sure the playlist is always synonymous with the mood. I have been very fortunate to have met my favorite artistes, Koffi Olomide, Fally Ipupa and Ferrè Gola who came here last year! In Kenya, Nyashinski number 1, Nameless and Kato Change.

The best part about The Alchemist is how much it has been an experiment thus far. There was no written down plan, no foresight. Just people who had a dream of making something truly special chipping in their ideas and watching them grow and flourish into what it is today. The energy here and making sure I can keep the spirit up, is what keeps me going and makes me happy.

If I had 5 million dollars, I would put it all back into the Alchemist, and keep everyone who has seen it get here around, to what would be a wild ride!
